Online high school expanding

For the first time, Rapid City Academy Online will offer high school students more enrollment flexibility for the courses it offers on the Internet.

"Beginning Dec. 13, we're prepared to enroll students anytime from now through Feb. 28," Rapid City Academy principal Deb Steele said.

With a growing course list and more students, Rapid City Academy Online continues to evolve, Steele said. Although there are 16 entities in the state that provide online high school courses, Rapid City's is the only program that gives students the flexibility of logging into a course anytime, day or night.

Students from other school districts and home-schooled students also use the online program.

And, as that happens, new challenges emerge, Steele said.

The Rapid City School District charges students $60 to take an online course. The fee covers 24-hour, seven-day-a-week technology support. There are no tuition or book fees associated with the courses.
